Come scegliere il materasso per bambini?

How to choose a children's mattress?

Buying a mattress for a newborn is an essential purchase, which you need to be vigilant about. Different parameters come into play: safety, comfort, etc. What should I check before purchasing? Here's everything you need to know.

Putting a baby to bed requires adequate accessories so that he can sleep comfortably, right from birth. You will therefore have to find a suitable mattress so that your baby can sleep peacefully! What type of mattress to choose? Which sizes to choose? What thickness?

Choosing a children's mattress: what sizes and measurements to choose for your child? What thickness?

The first question to ask yourself before buying a mattress for your child is the size. How to do it ? The most important thing to take into consideration when choosing a baby mattress is that it has the same dimensions as the crib base. This is important because you need to avoid a hole between the box spring and the mattress, which the baby could slip into while sleeping. Conversely, a mattress that is too large will not be flat in the crib and the baby will sleep uncomfortable.

When it comes to standard baby mattress sizes, you will typically have the option to choose between two sizes. The first, for smaller children, measures 60 x 120 centimetres. For children who are starting to grow, the size can be 70 X 140 centimeters. For thickness, this parameter is less important. As a rule, it is between 10 and 12 centimeters.

Baby mattress: what density?

If the size of the mattress is important, among the criteria that a mattress must meet, we must also pay close attention to the density.

A children's mattress must be firmer than an adult mattress. A mattress that is too soft can pose risks to the safety of the child. As a general rule, the density required for a foam mattress is between 20 and 30 kg/m3. For latex mattresses, it is between 55 and 77 kg per cubic meter.

How to choose a good children's mattress: the materials

For mattresses intended for children, favor materials such as foam, latex, wool or coconut fibre. How to choose? It all depends on your budget. Foam is the most used and least expensive material. If you can, choose natural materials, such as coconut fiber, but these organic materials are more expensive.

Furthermore, latex offers real comfort for the baby, in particular due to its flexibility and its thermoregulatory properties. Like coconut fiber, latex is a rather expensive material, and heavier than a foam mattress.
